River Alde

March 2024 and August 2024

We went to Suffolk for the first time last Summer and one of our stops was Orford Ness, a coastal shingle spit that’s a nature reserve. It’s quite bleak on a wet August day, particularly with the rusting military ruins. After getting the ferry back to Orford we walked along the river in the drizzle and I took some snaps of the landscape. This small painting (7” x 5”) is a quick attempt to capture the colours and slight bleakness of the scene.

In August I attempted a larger version of it. The boats drove me slightly mad but I got there in the end!
